From part-time tutor to founding JonesTutoring LTD

The Spark of a Tutoring Career: Dan's journey into education began unexpectedly at the age of 17. "I remember being 17, having just joined Sixth Form (the UK equivalent to college/post-16 education), when my friend brought to my attention a job at a local tutoring charity called Connie Rothman Learning Trust," Dan recalls. What was meant to be a standard interview turned into his first day on the job, tutoring two students in maths and one in English.

This experience was transformative for Dan. "Immediately, it was clear that this was my way forward," he shares. "There was something about having my self-diagnosed nerdiness put into such valuable action, to the point where I was having a real positive impact on these students and their grades, that told me this was the industry to which I wanted to dedicate my time."

Dan's philosophy on education goes beyond mere knowledge transfer. He believes that "Education isn't just about explaining facts and assessing people on how well they can recall them; it's about creating the next generation of innovators. It's about building students and individuals into people who can think, act and thrive independently through your support and teaching."

From Tutor to Entrepreneur: After nearly two years at the charity, Dan took the leap to establish his own tutoring business, JonesTutoring. What started as a solo venture soon grew into an agency as Dan recognized the scalability of his model. "I was tutoring just for myself before realising I had something scalable, so naturally, I scaled it!" he explains.

As he prepared to attend University College London (UCL), Dan expanded his educational offerings. He launched a new venture focused on brain coaching and teaching students how to learn effectively. This initiative has seen remarkable growth, amassing over 23,000 learners in just a few weeks.

Overcoming Challenges: Like many first-time entrepreneurs, Dan faced significant challenges, particularly the lack of guidance. "The biggest challenge in my journey was the element of being 'unguided'. My family hadn't started businesses before, and there wasn't much entrepreneurship support in my sixth form either," Dan shares.

However, he turned this challenge into a motivating factor. "Ironically, the same reason that it felt daunting was also why it felt so rewarding to succeed," he reflects. Dan overcame this obstacle through persistent research, finding the right software and resources, and analyzing competitors.

He emphasizes the importance of resilience in the face of uncertainty and self-doubt. "If you can maintain your focus and continue to learn about your industry despite these challenges, you're well-positioned for success," Dan advises.

Secrets of running successful online education business

The Three Pillars of Online Education Success: Drawing from his experiences, Dan identifies three key elements for success in online education:

  1. Solid Infrastructure: Building a strong foundation is crucial. This includes:

  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system

  • Sales funnel

  • Accounting software

  • Sales platform

  • Education-specific resources

Dan spent months creating a digitized hub of resources, including exam papers, textbooks, websites, YouTube channels, and online courses. While time-consuming, this investment paid off significantly. "Once I had created this digitised hub of resources, my job of planning lessons and creating lesson timelines became significantly easier—perhaps ten times more efficient," Dan explains.

He also stresses the importance of finding the right tools and platforms. After experimenting with various website builders, Dan discovered Workee, which streamlined his operations considerably.

  1. Robust Marketing Strategy: Dan's approach to marketing centers on creating value first. He created a social-media-facing brand, Thelearningjay, to grow his email list. "Within 3 months I had an email list of 10,000+ students around the globe," Dan shares. His strategy involved providing free, high-value digital products that served a genuine purpose.

He advises experimenting with different marketing approaches, noting that many of his best leads came from individual student outreach on social media. Dan emphasizes the importance of understanding your audience and market, researching effective ways to pique interest and attract potential clients.

  1. Clear Educational Philosophy and Plan: Dan stresses the importance of having a well-defined brand message and philosophy. "If I don't know the reason behind my brand, how the hell will a consumer?" he points out. This clarity became particularly valuable when scaling his business and recruiting more tutors.

Leveraging Workee for Business Growth: Dan uses Workee for hosting and sales, praising its flexibility and simplicity. "It removes all the hassle that I had to face with my previous websites while still having all the valuable integrations," he explains. He particularly appreciates the company's openness to user feedback and continuous platform improvements.

To maximize the value of a Workee subscription, Dan recommends:

  1. Integrating it with your main lead funnel (e.g., Instagram)

  2. Optimizing your profile for Workee space to boost organic reach

Continuous Learning and Innovation: Dan's approach to business education and idea generation is multifaceted. He relies on:

  1. Trial and error

  2. Reading business books

  3. Dedicating 10-30 minutes daily to creativity and brainstorming

He also employs unique brainstorming techniques, such as approaching his business from various perspectives. For example, he might ask himself, "How would the world's worst salesman pitch this?" or "What would a logical robot do?"

Advice for Aspiring Online Educators: Drawing from his experiences, Dan offers several key pieces of advice:

  1. Start social media marketing early: "The key thing I would have changed would have been to start the social media funnel much sooner. This would've given me time to learn marketing earlier, whilst also leaving enough time to compile resources."

  2. Embrace the "Shoshin" or beginner's mindset: "As a beginner entrepreneur, sometimes you have no idea of what you're doing, and a lot of the time that means you may get in your own way. So, keep learning about new ideas, keep experimenting with new ideas, and go from there."

  3. Focus on providing value before revenue: Create high-quality, free resources to build your audience and establish credibility.

  4. Be resilient: Persevere through uncertainty and self-doubt.

  5. Continuously educate yourself: Stay updated on industry trends and business strategies.

  6. Experiment with different approaches: Be open to trying new marketing techniques and business strategies.
